Learning Through Service- 2010

Dear Seniors,

This blog will help you keep in touch during your service learning project. It is an open classroom allowing you to be your own teachers. Do not hesitate to write comments, add pictures and videos, and reflect on your project before, during and after your internship. Remember that you are in charge of your learning process.

Mr. Gustave

My first week at The Wolf School was definitely challenging, but I am having a great time with the kids. The teachers in Room 2 (the classroom I am in) have given me a lot of independence with the students, and they are really treating me as an equal. I am learning new things every day from my kids: quick problem solving, flexibility, and communicating clearly are probably the most important. I am so excited to start my second week! We are going on a field trip to the Boston Museum of Science. I also can't wait to share the rest of my experience with all of you, and I hope everyone is enjoying their service projects!

Hello again! It's Jess Coon in case anyone didn't know I was at The Wolf School for my project. I know I posted yesterday, but today was a big day so I wanted to share. Mondays are definitely difficult for many of the students at Wolf because of the transition from the weekend to school days, and it showed in the classroom today. We all had to give the kids a lot more reminders than usual to stay focused or be respectful, and today was the first day in my time there that a student did not earn free time at the end of the day. Even though today was not the most fun, it showed me a bit more of the spectrum of need for the students there.
Today was also a big day because it was the last day of Wolf Pack, the after school art program. I started volunteering at Wolf Pack the week after March break which really helped me to prepare for going to the school full time. I'm really happy I got to make a connection with these kids, and even though it took them some time to adjust to me, by the end my being there was just part of the routine. The students did some really great work during my time there, and I have some pictures from Wolf Pack to include in my presentation.
Still hoping everyone is having a great experience!
